Congo. By: Michael Crichton. Rating: 70%. Brief Summary: A trip into the African jungle looking for diamonds. Oh, and Amy the Gorilla goes for the ride also.

The novel centers on an expedition searching for diamonds and investigating the mysterious deaths of a previous expedition in the dense tropical rainforest of the Congo. I admire Michael Crichton as a writer, his high-concept ideas often make for an entertaining read, even if he lacks the finesse to give his work more literary merit. Congo is absolutely no exception to this rule. Michael Crichton has sold over 200 million books, which have been translated into thirty-eight languages; thirteen of his books have been made into films. Also known as a filmmaker and the creator of ER, he remains the only writer to have had the number one book, movie, and TV show simultaneously. Michael Crichton's work should be considered the epitome of geek literature (AKA science fiction, genre fiction, or speculative fiction), but was somehow embraced by the mainstream -- so much so that even if the academic crowd doesn't take him very seriously, Crichton still addressed Congress.
